World Cup Results Could Have Major Impacts On Open Championship Viewers In America

England's World Cup result could impact the Open Championship.

England will face Argentina on Wednesday afternoon in the World Cup with a championship appearance on the line. The winner will play Spain in the title. The result of the semifinal matchup could have major impacts on golf viewers.

The Open Championship will be wrapping up on Sunday, the same day the World Cup championship is scheduled to be played. Officials are not ruling out significant scheduling changes should England advance.

That could involve moving tee times up in attempts to beat the start of the soccer game. It wouldn’t be ideal for most American fans watching from home.

World Cup could impact Open Championship.

England is one game away from a World Cup finals appearance following an impressive run through the field. The team flew through group play with wins over Croatia and Panama sandwiched around a stalemate with Ghana.

It then beat Congo DR, Mexico, and Norway to reach the Final 4. Now, it has maybe its toughest task. Argentina is the defending World Cup champion. It entered the event as a popular favorite.

England, too, is talented. At this moment in time, it is favored to win the contest ever-so-slightly. If they pull off the victory, they will play for a World Cup title. Everyone in the country will want to be a part of it, even those that purchased tickets to watch a dramatic golf finish.

The World Cup finals are scheduled to kick off at 8 PM local time on Sunday. The Open Championship will be finishing up its closing stages around that time, too.

In order to avoid a clash, and potential mass exodus, officials are weighing their options.

David Rumsey of Front Office Sports says discussions are being had. While a scheduling change is far from confirmed, it has not been ruled out.

At this point in time, there is no plan to move tee times. That could change after England’s World Cup matchup on Wednesday. For American viewers, it could create issue.

England is five hours ahead of those on the East Coast. That time difference grows the further west you move.

Last year’s final Open group teed off at 2:30 PM local time in the UK. That’s 9:30 AM for East Coasters in the US. Should things need to be pushed up, it could make for a very early Sunday morning for American viewers.

The US Open last month saw mass exoduses throughout the weekend. Those instances were related to the timing of transportation rather than a rival sports event. Regardless, there was a negative impact.

As it stands, the golf tournament will finish somewhere between 6:30 and 7:30 PM local time, estimating a 4-5 hour round time. The World Cup will start at 8 PM.

The Open Championship doesn’t want attendees to bail on the final day in order to watch soccer. We’ll see if the English national team forces an adjustment.

If it does, US viewers will need to set their alarm clocks early for the Sunday round.
