Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige called the collapse of Blade the biggest failure of his career. Oscar-winning actor Mahershala Ali, who was set to play the film’s title character, clearly doesn’t feel the need to convince him otherwise.
Marvel Studios announced the Blade reboot at San Diego Comic-Con in 2019, with the two-time Oscar winner cast as the Daywalker.
Over the years, the project went through multiple writers and two directors — Bassam Tariq exited in 2022, Yann Demange joined and exited after that — before development quietly stalled out amid the 2023 industry strikes and was eventually shelved indefinitely.

Ali doesn’t just agree with Feige that Blade was a disaster — he says the Marvel boss should feel exactly as bad about it as he does.
“I feel like a gigantic loser and failure that we didn’t get off the ground with Mahershala,” Feige previously said about Blade’s cursed development.
“I don’t know why it did to this day. I don’t know why it didn’t happen. I just know that it was Kevin, he said it was the biggest failure of his career, and I agree. 100%. He should feel that way,” Ali said in a recent interview with GQ.
Ali bemoaned having to put himself through training and move his family to Atlanta all for nothing.
“I’m saying no to things in that time because they own my schedule basically. I spent a year training. Yeah. I trained so hard ’til I blew my knee out.”
“I literally moved, uprooted my family. Moved to Atlanta. We’re there waiting to go and they just keep pushing it back pushing it back pushing it and we don’t… it doesn’t happen.”
The two-time Academy Award winner seems to have come to peace with how it all worked out, though.
“In the end, the failure became a blessing in disguise. It helped me stop waiting for the golden ticket and start building my own path.”
Ali has since reunited with Tariq, the director Marvel let go, on Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother, which currently holds a 97% critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes and hits theaters this Friday, September 25.
