It looked like No. 4-ranked West Linn was going to defeat No. 2-ranked Nelson on the road during the top-five high school football game in Oregon on Friday night. And then the momentum swung in favor of the underdogs before controversy struck on the penultimate play.
A game-winning two-point conversion probably should’ve been ruled short of the end zone.
However, there is no video replay for high school football and the officials ruled the conversion as successful. The call on the field stands regardless of whether or not it was correct.
West Linn was going to win the high school football game.
West Linn High School is located ~20 miles south of Portland. Adrienne C. Nelson High School is located ~10 miles east. Both schools enroll more than 1,500 students in Grades 9-12. Both high school football programs compete in Class 6A.
The former traveled to the latter on Friday night.
It was a battle between two top-five teams that went right down to the wire in front of a packed crowd.
The Lions scored first on the first play of the second quarter and had a chance to go up by 14 but they threw an interception. The Hawks tied the game on their next possession. They traded touchdowns again before halftime. It was tied at 14-14.
The second half was just as tight.
Nelson missed a field goal in the third quarter. West Linn responded with a touchdown to go up by seven.
And then it got dicey for the home team when the Hawks fumbled at their own 19-yard-line but the Lions failed to take advantage of the short field with a penalty, bad snap and two incomplete passes. The score held at 21-14.
Nelson tied it right back up on its next possession, 21-21. West Linn answered, 28-21. Nelson answered, 28-28. West Linn took back the lead with two minutes and 41 seconds remaining, 35-28.
The Hawks had just under three minutes to go the length of the field and score a touchdown. They did exactly that with a 53-yard completion and, two plays later, a rushing touchdown from two yards out.
Now that you’re all caught up on what happened during the first 47 minutes and 53 seconds of the high school football game, this is where it gets weird. Lets get into it.
Nelson stepped out of bounds on the two-point conversion to win.
Nelson trailed West Linn 35-34 with seven seconds remaining in the fourth quarter. It could either kick the extra point to tie the game and (likely) force overtime or go for two and the win. It landed on the latter. The Hawks decided to go for two.
Senior quarterback Braylon Gaines took the snap and looked to pass. Nobody was open so he rolled to his right. Nobody was open so he took off running to the pylon. A bang-bang play at the goal line was ruled successful.
Officials granted Nelson with the two-point conversion. The Hawks went on to win the game 36-34.
Upon further review, it is unclear as to whether Gaines actually scored. It looked like his left foot stepped out of bounds before the ball crossed the goal line. Here is a second angle:

If you look closely, you can see Gaines’ left foot step on the sideline inside the one-yard-line. The ball in tucked in his right arm and his body is turned away from the end zone. He should’ve been ruled short. His foot was out of bounds.
The two-point conversion should not have counted. West Linn should’ve defeated Nelson with a 35-34 win.
