A 124-year-old Olympic Cycling Medal originally given to Britain has now been rightfully awarded to France ahead of the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.
You, you read that right.
Reuters reports that Lloyd Hildebrand, who competed in two cycling events and came second in the men’s 25km, was originally awarded a medal for Britain. But that medal should have gone to France.

“Recent research has now concluded that, even though Hildebrand was a British citizen, he was born and brought up in France, and competed for a French club before and after Paris 1900,” the IOC said in a statement Thursday.
Athletes were registered under the national federation they were competing with at the time, and National Olympic Committees were not yet part of the process.
“The medal won by Hildebrand will now be credited to France instead of Great Britain in the official records of the Olympic Games Paris 1900 and in the IOC’s database,” the IOC said.
Hildebrand did not attend the official medal correction, as you can well imagine.
He was born on Christmas of 1870 in Tottenham, England but died in 1924 in Levallois-Perret, France.
According to Wikipedia, which as we all know is world’s most accurate source, he lived in France for much of his life and married a Frenchwoman.
Little else about Hildebrand, his life, or his family seems to be available on the internet. But given his prior affiliation with a French cycling club and the time he spent in the country, one can imagine he would support the ruling.
Although something tells us Great Britain won’t be too heartbroken over it.
Britain has absolutely dominated Olympic cycling in recent years.
As of 2021, of the Great Britain has won 100 Olympic cycling madelas. Half (50) of which came since 2008, including 28 gold medals.
So yeah, France can have it’s adorable little 1900 silver medal.
