A new, and potentially illegal, paintball-firing home security system is taking the crowdfunding world by storm.
“Introducing the ultimate home security alarm system – PaintCam Smart Home Security,” the product’s website boasts.
Cool, right? It brings to mind something like a scene out of a comedy movie. You know, where the prickly neighbor does anything and everything to keep people off of his lawn?
But wait…
It continues, “PaintCam’s advanced technology detects both humans and pets, utilizing state-of-the-art facial recognition to distinguish between welcome guests and potential intruders. In the event of an unwanted intrusion, our system springs into action, deploying paintball markers or tear gas to deter the intruder and mark them for easy identification by authorities.”
Tear gas? That can’t be legal, can it?
On the plus side, at least your friends and pets won’t get blasted with paintballs, or gassed.
It appears that based on the Kickstarter campaign that the PaintCam security system will cost somewhere between $1,400 and $2,000 depending which one of the three available models you choose to purchase.
That’s assuming, of course, that it is still in stock. Because the company started out with a 12,000 euro goal and has already gotten more than six times that amount, meaning people are really wanting to buy this paintball security system.
“With advanced AI technology EVE can detect and track objects in real-time while seamlessly adapting to challenging low-light conditions. But it doesn’t stop there; her intelligence extends to recognizing individuals, animals, and various objects with precision,” the PaintCam’s website claims.
“If an unknown face appears next to someone known – perhaps your daughter’s new boyfriend – PaintCam defers to your instructions. It’s security on your terms, even if your kids don’t always follow them.”
The current planned release date for this unique security system is sometime in late 2024 or early 2025.
There’s just one problem. (Or well, one BIG problem.)
According to CNET, “automatic paintball and tear gas pellet guns appear to fall under the category of home traps. And setting traps on your property made to hurt people is specifically illegal, even in states with ‘stand your ground’ laws. A few minutes of thought makes it clear why booby traps like these are against the law — despite what Home Alone taught so many kids.
“United States law (along with other countries) has built-in protections for people, even trespassers. That’s why you can call the cops on trespassers or use home security cam footage to get them in trouble, but you can’t try to hurt them just for being on your property. And yes, a paintball to the eye certainly counts, not to mention the tear gas.”
There is also potential issues with your homeowner’s insurance, however, the company’s founder Srecko Dumanic claims it’s all good.
“We have no data that our product could be illegal, this is why we are adding all these different switches or safeguards in the app in order to comply with different legislations,” Dumanic told Gizmodo.
