The USC Trojans and Ole Miss Rebels have cancelled a future home and home football series scheduled for 2025 and 2026. The nixed contests rob viewers of the chance to see Lane Kiffin return to the school where he once coached while continuing a recent trend for the Trojans.
It seems Lincoln Riley and Co. are doing all they can to dodge future SEC opponents following the program’s move to the Big Ten.
Earlier this offseason, we learned that Riley’s been trying for two years to get this season’s opener vs. LSU removed from the slate but was unsuccessful in his attempts to do so.
While an expanded College Football Playoff was expected to result in a less watered-down regular season – given teams with multiple losses will soon compete for national championships – it’s done quite the opposite.
Television obligations and other event scheduling impacted by the primetime matchup wouldn’t allow for USC to skirt LSU. The same won’t be said for Ole Miss.

Lincoln Riley is avoiding the SEC at all costs, at least according to fans. Many around college football believed he initially accepted the USC role instead of an open LSU gig to avoid that fierce competition.
Despite boasting a Heisman trophy winning signal caller in the backfield, though, the path to a CFP appearance proved no easier in the PAC 12.
Unfortunately, this is a trend that seems likely to continue across the sport. Conferences will have sights set on landing as many at-large bids as possible in the new 12-team playoff setup, meaning losses need to be at a premium for the league as a whole.
Rather than incentivizing strength of schedule, realignment is only stripping viewers of these marquee out of conference matchups.
