Yankees’ Retaliation Backfires When Hit Batter Scores Deciding Run In 7-6 Loss

The New York Yankees got revenge on the Baltimore Orioles Wednesday night by plunking Gunnar Henderson in an apparent act of retaliation.

After seeing both Gleyber Torres and Aaron Judge hit by pitches in the game prior, the New York pitching staff seemed to target Henderson as a way of getting even.

That move would wind up backfiring!

Henderson was pegged by a Victor Gonzalez fastball in the top of the seventh inning with the Yankees trailing, 4-1. At the time, it didn’t seem like it would matter much in the grand scheme of the things, but as it turns out, it would have a huge impact on the game’s outcome.

“It’s hard for us to know what’s in Victor Gonzalez’s mind,” the broadcast booth said after seeing the pitch. “So, we cannot sit here and say, with 100% certainty, that he hit Gunnar Henderson [on purpose], but here’s what we can say. If the Yankees were thinking about doing something like this – down three in the seventh with the bases empty is the time they might do it.

“And if they did throw up and in intentionally to Gunnar Henderson, frankly, shame on them.”

Henderson trotted down to first base after that hit by pitch, then subsequently stole second. He was knocked in two batters later by Ryan Mountcastle to put the O’s up 5-1.

New York’s bats then came alive in the bottom half of the frame as they scored three runs to close the deficit to just one. They’d tack on the tying run in the bottom of the ninth before losing 7-6 in extra innings.

That Baltimore run proved important!

Had Henderson not been plunked, and not gotten on base, that fifth run might never have crossed the plate. That would’ve allowed the Yankees to tie things up with that three-run seventh, before walking things off in the bottom of the ninth.

Ouch!

Now, there’s always the possibility that Henderson would’ve found his way to first base by way of a single or walk but simply hitting him made the job all the easier!

The Yankees retaliated to get revenge.

Tuesday night, both Aaron Judge and Gleyber Torres were hit by pitches in the hand, the first of which forced Judge to leave the game.

The slugger wasn’t happy about being pitch, saying it was one of a number of “up and in” deliveries.

“I was definitely p—ed, there were a couple of balls up and in… They like to throw in. That’s part of it.”

He wasn’t the only one upset with the Orioles in that series opener. After seeing a second teammate plunked a few innings later, New York outfielder Alex Verdugo was seen threatening Baltimore players from the dugout.

Interestingly enough, warnings were not handed out after Henderson was hit on Wednesday, despite what had transpired the night before. While he certainly had the right to be angry, the Orioles star kept his cool and walked down to first base without issue.

He’d make them pay on the scoreboard as opposed to with a reaction. It doesn’t always pay off to get even!
