EA Sports College Football 25 may well be the most anticipated sports video game release of all time.
The beloved franchise returned after an 11-year hiatus and fans couldn’t wait to get their hands on the new game.
But as it turns out, the game may well have a practical use as well. First-year Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer told Mike Golic Sr. that his players used the game in order to learn their new offensive playbook ahead of the upcoming season.

“We had some plays that we’ve run and some of them, you know, they know the read progression and you’re like wondering how they know that,” DeBoer said. “And so I guess there is an element to where it’s a positive too, right? The things that they do away from the facility, especially in the end of the summer when it first came out, I know they were all in. I’m sure there’s a lot more being played then what I realize even at this point, too.”
DeBoer led the Washington Huskies to the 2024 College Football Playoff championship game on the back of a dynamic offense.
He’ll have plenty of weapons at his disposal in Tuscaloosa, including star quarterback Jalen Milroe, who expressed his excitement about learning the new offense.
“Spring ball was a great opportunity to get acclimated with the new coaching staff with Coach DeBoer and all the new offensive coaches that was in place. Coach DeBoer is very intelligent and has a great scheme,” Milroe said. “It’s definitely evident as to why they’re so successful on offense no matter where he is for the quarterback position, and it’s the system he has in place.
“There are so many things the quarterback has in terms of resources so they can be the best them every time they snap the ball. With having spring ball, with having summer practices and with having meeting time with them, it’s definitely a special system and a special opportunity that’s here.”
DeBoer will have to find a way to replace offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb. Grubb initially followed DeBoer to Bama. But he left shortly after to become the offensive coordinator for the Seattle Seahawks.
For Washington tight ends coach Nick Sheridan is now the offensive coordinator for the Crimson Tide. Sheridan called plays for the Indiana Hoosiers in 2020 and 2021 after DeBoer left Indiana to become the head coach at Fresno State.
