Denny Hamlin Torches NASCAR Officials On Podcast After Controversial Richmond Ending

There are few if any NASCAR drivers today that are as outspoken as Joe Gibbs Racing superstar Denny Hamlin.

So when Austin Dill0n intentionally wrecked both Hamlin and Joey Logan to win Sunday’s Cook Out 400 at Richmond, you just knew Hamlin was going to have a lot to say about it.

Hamlin didn’t hold back when speaking to reporter Bob Pockrass immediately after the race, claiming “we’re never, ever gonna be taken seriously in this sport because we have no real officiating.”

But he took things to the next level Tuesday on his Actions Detrimental podcast when he expressed concern for the future of the sport if Dillon wasn’t penalized.

Denny Hamlin Fears For The Future Of NASCAR If Austin Dillon Isn’t Penalized

“You are the sanctioning body,” Hamlin said when asked where the line should be drawn. “You are the big boys in the room. You have to make tough calls sometimes. Sometimes you make the right call even if it’s a tough call. … You can’t wreck two guys to then go win a race and then reap the benefits and reward of that.”

Hamlin stated that he’s worried for the future of the sport if they don’t draw a line.

“You can basically say to everyone that we deem that as not a racing incident, that it was intentional. It altered the finish of the race, therefore this person does not deserve to win.” he said. “…The sanctioning body needs to be big boys and make big boy calls.”

Dillon entered the race 32nd in points and with little to no shot of making the playoffs. But the victory at Richmond automatically qualifies him for the playoffs due to the NASCAR playoff format.

“It took zero talent to wipe someone out and then wipe someone else out,” Hamlin said of the move.

Hamlin noted that the playoff structure incentivizes drivers to wreck one another for the win. But he said that Dillon’s actions went far beyond anything that anyone had ever done before.

Logano, who was leading entering the final turn of the race, sided with Hamlin as well.

“He was four car-lengths back, it wasn’t even close,” Logano said. “It’s a bunch of BS. Not even freaking close. Bump-and-run, I get it, but he got in there and just drove through me. It’s ridiculous.”

Star drivers Chase Elliott and Bubba Wallace were both handed one-race suspensions by NASCAR for intentionally wrecking other drivers in a dangerous fashion in recent years.

But it appears Dill0n will face no repercussions after doing the same to Hamlin.
