Mark Cuban Explains Why He Can’t Buy His Hometown Pittsburgh Pirates Despite Wanting To

Mark Cuban

Former Dallas Mavericks majority owner Mark Cuban is a big baseball fan.

Specifically, Cuban is a fan of the Pittsburgh Pirates, who he’s rooted for since growing up in the Mount Lebanon suburb of Pittsburgh.

But despite that, and the fact that the Pirates are one of the worst and cheapest organizations in Major League Baseba,, Cuban says he isn’t going to buy the team.

Not because he doesn’t want to, but because he can’t…

Miami sports radio show host Jon Linder tweeted Wednesday night claiming that Cuban told him he couldn’t buy the team even if he wanted to.

“I talked with Mark Cuban about buying the team back in 2006,” Linder wrote. “He loves the Pirates but says the owners will NEVER sell due to their business model. They aren’t required to spend money so they never do & they make big profits every year through TV & everything else. Lost cause.”

Mark Cuban Says Bob Nutting Won’t Sell The Pittsburgh Pirates To Anybody

Cuban appeared to back up that story on Thursday morning.

If someone offered you a job, that paid 25m or more per year, to stand in Market Square and let the entire city of Pittsburgh yell at you, would you take that job? That job is owning the Pirates. Why would they sell,” he wrote.

It’s a fair point.

The Pirates are currently nine games under .500 and in last place in the NL Central. They’re set to miss the playoffs for the 10th consecutive season and have the league’s second-lowest payroll.

But owner Bob Nutting, who purchased the team in 2007, doesn’t appear to care. He’s still raking in money hand over fist.

And while fans clearly hate Nutting and have been asking for him to sell the team for several years, it seems nothing is going to change.
