When watching Stephen A. Smith’s comments, it’s clear that he’s not trying to explicitly offend women or their ability to sacrifice for their families. He was more engaging in the increasingly retrograde gender role idea of men being the lone providers and protectors of families.
“These football players make those decisions every single day as men — provide, protect,” Smith said. “That’s our number one priority. That’s how most of us think. And that plays a role into the kind of decisions men make, even when they’re deemed selfish, foolish, ill-advised, or whatever. It comes with it when you’re a man.”
Still, Duncan was incited enough by Smith’s comments to respond to them directly with her own personal experiences. This isn’t the 1950s anymore, and Smith’s evocation of the mindset of those times seems to be what irks Duncan. Duncan also didn’t seem to be inherently offended by his comments, nor was she necessarily speaking to Smith, but rather to what seems like the audience at home.
“As someone who is a woman who has two scars that go from hip to hip because I’ve had two C-sections in an effort to provide for my family and create a family for my family, I understand sacrifice. A Black woman in this country, whose mortality rates are incredibly high, I understand making sacrifices and trying to mitigate risk when it comes to your family, expanding your family, and protecting your family,” she said.
During a discussion about Tua Tagovailoa's concussion, Elle Duncan responded to Stephen A. Smith saying men have a mindset of sacrificing for their families.

To Smith’s credit, he didn’t interrupt Duncan once during her minute-long response, only chiming in at the end to say “That’s fair. You’re right. No disagreement there.”
As for Tagovailoa, Duncan was pleading for someone that “truly believes and loves” him to have a conversation with him about what his life could look like if these concussions were to continue or if he were to stop playing now.
“All I’m simply imploring is that someone in Tua’s corner is having a real conversation with him right now about what quality of life looks like. And we all face an existential crisis at some point in our lives, all of us at some point have got to make a turn from the thing we’re defined by for our entire lives.”
According to reports, the Dolphins are going to attempt to sign a veteran quarterback with Tua in the concussion protocol. Some NFL fans have called for them to reach out to Tom Brady, whom they tried to sign in 2022.
