It’s way too early to come to any sweeping conclusions concerning the quality of the players who were selected in the 2024 NBA Draft, but they’ve gotten off to a historically awful start based on one stat highlighting how they’ve fared around a week into the season.
The 2000 NBA Draft class is widely considered the worst collection of rising players in the history of the league, as just three guys who were selected that year (Kenyon Martin, Jamaal Magloire, and Michael Redd) appeared in at least one All-Star Game by the time their career came to an end.
Only time will tell how things will ultimately pan out for the 58 guys who were scooped up in the 2024 NBA Draft, but it’s safe to say members of front offices across the league were not particularly thrilled about the level of talent they found themselves dealing with before the event kicked off in June.
As things currently stand, a grand total of 52 rookies have played at least one game since the NBA season got underway last week, and according to an article Tom Haberstroh penned for Yahoo Sports, they’ve gotten off to an unprecedented start for all of the wrong reasons.
According to numbers the outlet obtained from Stathead, no rookie has been able to post at least 15 points in any of their first three games, which is seemingly the first time in the history of the league we’ve witnessed a drought of that magnitude (2014 marks the closest we’ve come previously, as Elfrid Payton was the lone player to hit that mark during the same span).
As Haberstroh notes, Carlton Carrington is currently averaging the most points per game among rookies with just 8.7, and while he and other notable names including Zach Edey, Alex Sarr, and first-overall pick Zaccharie Risacher have averaged more than 20 minutes per contest, there isn’t a single player who’s even managed to hit double digits when it comes to PPG.
We’re still dealing with a pretty small sample size and there’s obviously plenty of time for these guys to improve as they adjust to a new level of competition, but they certainly haven’t inspired a ton of confidence so far.
