The New York Yankees took care of business against the Kansas City Royals in Game 5 of the ALDS on Thursday night, largely on the back of Gerrit Cole’s stellar pitching performance.
After the win, the 34-year-old defending Cy Young winner emulated what makes baseball so great as he turned into a little kid when describing how much he was enjoying the postgame celebration.
“Fired, I mean fired up. Had a couple IPAs, like with the boys. Sprayin’ some champagne, I mean like, this is the, this is the greatest!” Cole told the media after the series-clinching win.
Gerrit Cole was asked how he’s feeling about moving on to the ALCS:

In the 3-1 Game 4 win over the Royals in Kansas City, Cole pitched 7 innings and gave up six hits and one run. Cole’s start and win over the Royals was his 19th postseason start and brought his postseason ERA down to 2.94.
With their win over the Kansas City Royals in the American League Divisional Series, the Yankees have advanced to the American League Championship Series, where they’ll take on either the Cleveland Guardians or Detroit Tigers, who will be playing in a decisive Game 5 on Saturday, October 12.
The Yankees are looking to make it back to the World Series for the first time since 2009.
