While embattled offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett hasn’t been fired like head coach Robert Saleh was, Aaron Rodgers’ BFF hasn’t escaped Gang Green’s shakeup entirely unscathed, either.
On Thursday, October 10, new Jets interim head coach Jeff Ulbrich announced that Todd Downing, the team’s passing game coordinator and quarterbacks coach, would be taking over playcalling duties from Hackett, who has overseen an offense that’s shown no tangible improvement after upgrading its quarterback from Zach Wilson to Aaron Rodgers.
“After a lot of time to think about it — and did not make this decision easily by any means — I’m going to make Todd Downing the play-caller for the New York Jets going forward,” Ulbrich said on Thursday.
“And this is more a byproduct of a different take on things. I’m not saying it’s a better or worse take on things by any means. But just a different take on things, a fresh approach. So, ultimately, Todd will have the full say on the game plan and, ultimately, the plays that are called within the game.”
Because of Hackett’s role with the team as Aaron Rodgers’ emotional support pal, Ulbrich also made sure to shout out that Hackett would be a “big part” of the team’s (hypothetical) success moving forward.
“Staying that as well, just another testament to the human being that Nathaniel Hackett is — the fact that he’s going to give this everything in his body, and heart, and soul, and he’s going to be a big part of the success we’re going to have going forward from an offensive perspective,” Ulbrich added.
The Jets’ first game under Ulbrich as interim head coach will come against Josh Allen and the Buffalo Bills on Monday Night Football next week. Despite the turbulent start to their 2024 season, if the Jets beat the Bills in front of their home crowd, they’ll take over first place in the AFC East.
