Now that the New York Jets are all but mathematically eliminated from playoff contention, their Aaron Rodgers experiment can be certified as a failure, as the team is arguably worse now than when he arrived in New York.
Aaron Rodgers’ time on the Jets has been such as disaster, in fact, that ESPN’s Dan Orlovsky called it “one of the worst acquisitions in the history of the NFL” while reacting to the Jets’ 25-22 loss to the New England Patriots in Week 8.
In the Week 8 loss to New England, one of the two teams that the Jets have managed to beat this season, Rodgers completed 17 of 28 passes for 233 yards and two touchdowns.
“Right now, it’s one of the worst acquisitions in the history of the NFL. The Jets lost a game that is impossible to lose. It’s impossible to lose this game… It’s impossible to have a box score that they did and lose that game yesterday.”
Orlovsky then cited the miserable history that the Jets made in the loss, in which they became the first team since 1940 to score more than 20 points, not commit any turnovers, and hold their opponent to under 250 yards of offense and still lose the game. Since 1940, teams in those circumstances had been 756-0. Rodgers and the Jets have now turned that record into 756-1.
Since trading for Rodgers in April 2023, the future Hall of Fame quarterback has led Gang Green to just two wins while creating endless distractions in the process through his mercurial comments and frequent interviews.
Now sitting at 2-6 after eight games, the Jets will likely have to finish 8-1 across their final nine games if they want to make the playoffs as a Wild Card team, which obviously isn’t going to happen, thus likely leading to Rodgers’ retirement and the Jets cleaning house.
Rodgers and the Jets will again be in primetime in Week 9 when they host the Houston Texans for Thursday Night Football on Halloween night.
