The Kentucky Wildcats have been playing college football in some form or fashion since 1881. But despite a history that spans over a century, the Wildcats will make history on Saturday when they take on the Texas Longhorns in Austin.
That’s because it will be the farther west the ‘Cats have ever traveled to play a college football game. Kentucky has played at Texas one time prior. That came 73 years ago under legendary head coach Paul “Bear” Bryant. The Longhorns won that game 7-6. Later that season, the Wildcats would again travel to Texas, this time just east of Austin when they took on TCU in the 1952 Cotton Bowl. Kentucky had a bit more success in that game, coming away with a 20-7 victory.
But Texas has since expanded Darrell K. Royal Memorial Stadium. So Saturday’s game will officially be the farthest west that Kentucky has ever played.
UK has played a game in the Longhorn State only four times since (at Baylor in 1963 and 1977, at Houston in 1965 and at Texas A&M in 2018). With Texas and Texas A&M both now in the SEC and the league abandoning its two-division format, trips to Texas will be much more common in the years ahead, but Saturday’s game will still join the 1951 trip to Austin as the farthest west Kentucky has played a football game.

Unfortunately for the ‘Cats, Saturday’s historic trip isn’t likely to be a ton of fun. ESPN lists Texas as an 18.5-point favorite. The Wildcats are just 4-6 this season and need victories over both Texas and rival Louisville next week to become bowl-eligible.
