It would be shocking if UAB does not fire Trent Dilfer after the 2024 college football season comes to a conclusion in two weeks. In fact, he could/should be on his way out the door as soon as Sunday morning.
The Blazers drew one of the smallest crowds in program history on Saturday, even dating back to their days as a Division-III team in the fall of 1991.
UAB hired Dilfer to replace Bryant Vincent in December of 2022. His prior coaching experience included three years at a small, private high school in Nashville. That was it.
Players were furious with the decision and tried to shoot it down. As did a large portion of the fanbase. They wanted to retain Vincent as the full-time head coach after he led a 7-6 season with a bowl win as the interim. The administration did not listen and went with Dilfer anyway.
UAB fans are fed up with Trent Dilfer.
Sure enough, the unexpected hire has not worked. Louisiana-Monroe is just one win away from bowl eligibility in its first season with Vincent as head coach. UAB was mathematically eliminated from bowl contention in early November at 2-7 and actually lost to Dilfer’s predecessor!
To make matters worse, the losses are not even close. The Blazers went 2-8 in their first 10 games by a combined score of 386-247. A 59-21 win over Tulsa really helped to boost those numbers.
Even though the fanbase in Birmingham was not thrilled about the hire at first, they gave Dilfer a chance to prove them wrong. His support has rapidly declined. UAB drew an embarrassingly small crowd on the first week of October after an awkward interaction with the head coach during the week leading up to kickoff.
Absolutely nobody showed up on Saturday. Outside of the parents and families in attendance for Senior Day, the crowd was practically nonexistent.

Protective Stadium, which holds a maximum capacity of 41,700, was more than 80% empty and that might be understated. It was a ghost town.
If that doesn’t send a message to athletic director Mark Ingram, nothing will. Not only has Dilfer failed to deliver results, he lost support. Fans are not interested in watching the product he puts on the field every week. They would rather hit the bar to watch the other 131 FBS programs on television than pay money to watch a bad UAB team struggle to win yet another game. The head coach needs to go.
