Ken Niumatalolo was furious with officials during Saturday’s game between San Jose State and Oregon State in Corvallis. The legendary college football coach completely melted down on a referee even though his team reached bowl eligibility with an 11-point victory.

You know it was bad when even the winning coach is enraged by the result.

Niumatalolo, in his first season with SJSU after 16 years at Navy, took over the program during the offseason after Brent Brennan left for Arizona. The Spartans were picked to finish 10th in the 12-team Mountain West Conference. They currently sit third behind Boise State, Colorado State and UNLV.

Even though Niumatalolo is overachieving, he is not going to sit idly by and allow for the officials to get away with what he sees as a poor job. That was abundantly clear on Saturday.

Both teams were hindered by officiating throughout the entire game. San Jose State and Oregon State combined for 18 penalties. The former had eight. The latter had 10.

Two pass interference calls late in the fourth quarter were especially bad. They bailed out the Beavers and kept them in the game. They also upheld a catch during the second half even though the review very clearly showed the Oregon State player’s foot was out of bounds.

Fortunately, officiating was not the difference between a win or a loss for either side. Unfortunately, the excessive penalties spoiled a lot of big moments throughout the game.

Niumatalolo wanted to be very clear where he stood on the controversial calls. To do so, he approached the field judge on the field after the clock expired and unleashed his fury. Angry would be an understated word to describe his one-sided conversation.

It will be interesting to see whether the Mountain West chooses to punish Ken Niumatalolo for acting out or if it will admit he was right. For the winning coach to be that mad reflects a pretty clear college football officiating problem.
