Shawn Hochuli, son of Ed Hochuli, paid homage to his father during Sunday’s NFL game in Germany. The 46-year-old referee surprised everybody watching by speaking a completely different language.
It was a really cool moment for the league, which is working hard to grow the game on an international level.
Shawn worked his first NFL season in 2014. He was promoted from back judge to referee in 2018 following the retirement of his father. Ed is widely considered one of the best officials of all-time after 29 years with the league and 27 years as a crew chief.
The retired 73-year-old was on the call for countless playoff games and two Super Bowls. However, the most memorable moment of his historic career took place during the regular season in 2005.
Ed officiated the NFL’s first-ever regular season game played outside of the United States, when the Arizona Cardinals defeated the San Francisco 49ers 31-14 at Azteca Stadium in Mexico City. He decided to bring the international flair with him after receiving the assignment during the offseason.
Ed Hochuli learned basic Spanish to surprise the Mexican crowd with their native language. It wasn’t perfect, but it was still impressive. Fans appreciated his effort and cheered him on accordingly.

19 years later, his son did the exact same thing in a different country. Shawn Hochuli used German to announce a false start penalty in Munich. The crowd went wild.
Although both Hochulis continued their respective games in their native language, they did a fantastic job of getting the fans engaged and immediately won over their respective countries. Pretty cool.
Roger Goodell announced on Sunday that the NFL is eyeing eight international games next season, including one in Ireland. If he is smart, he will pay for Hochuli’s Dualingo subscription and send him over to the Emerald Isle!
