Joe Buck. Jim Nantz. Al Michaels. Howard Cosell. Pat Summerall. These are some of the names that are tossed around as the greatest announcers in the history of the National Football League.
And while all of those names are undoubtedly icons of NFL broadcasting, there’s a current announcer that flies under the radar that might actually be the GOAT, and that’s Kevin Harlan.
Harlan, 64 years old, has been calling NBA, NFL, college basketball, and college football games for over four decades now, as 2024 is the 40th consecutive season he’s called NFL games.
Virtually anyone who watches American sports has heard Harlan’s voice and if you ask *true* ball-knowers (like you and I), then they’ll likely tell you he’s actually their favorite broadcaster. When you listen to him call things like the Kansas City Chiefs game-winning blocked field goal over the weekend, how can he not be?

While there are tons of Harlan clips that justify his status as one of the elite broadcasters of all time, my personal favorite is from Week 17 of 2019, when Harlan found himself calling two games at once given they both had overlapping playoff implications.

Another classic Harlan call is from when he was on the mic for Furman’s upset of Virginia in the 2023 NCAA Tournament, in which he dropped the hilarious but also iconic phrase, “Did we just see what we think we just saw?!”
“It’s a career-long endeavor. I’m always trying to get better. It may not be perfect. It never is. But the goal of trying to be perfect is something that I still love to chase,” Harlan told The Athletic in 2023 about evolving as a broadcaster.
The fact that Harlan isn’t the play-by-play man when CBS has the Super Bowl broadcasting rights should tell you all you need to know about how underrated he is as a broadcaster.
