It appeared Providence College had a new unofficial mascot after a fan brought a live duck to the season opener where the team eked out a win, but things have taken an unfortunate turn now that the animal has been banned from the team’s arena.
On Monday, the Providence College men’s basketball team kicked off its season with a showdown against Central Connecticut State University in a game where the Blue Devils managed to give the Friars a bit of a scare before the latter escaped with a 57-55 victory.
The highlight of the game didn’t really have anything to do with what unfolded on the court, although I like to believe Providence College was propelled to victory with the help of the vibes generated by the live duck that was in attendance at Amica Mutual Pavillion for the showdown.
I wasn’t able to find any information concerning the identity of the duck in question when it transformed into a bit of a viral sensation, but WJAR was able to dig up some more information after tracking down Justin Taymes, the Providence native who’s spent the past four months caring for the male duck he dubbed Dawn.
Taymes said he connected with someone who helped him register Dawn as a service animal, which has allowed him to take the duck into places you usually wouldn’t expect to find them—including a college basketball game.
Dawn’s owner says the momentum immediately shifted in favor of Providence College when he brought the duck down to the student section toward the end of Monday’s game, and he said he was looking forward to bringing his feathered friend to Saturday night’s showdown with Stonehill.
Unfortunately, the same outlet now reports Dawn has been banned from the arena, as AMP GM Larry Lepore explained the decision by saying:
“As much as some people might have thought it was cute, there were other people that we got responses back from the public thinking that it was kind of cruel to the animal.
We checked the law, we talked to individuals, we even talked to a veterinarian who says it’s really not the environment for a duck to be in.”
Lepore added Taymes is permitted to enter the venue (which is also home to the Providence Bruins) without Dawn at his side, and while there’s no way to know how the Friars season is going to pan out, it will be hard to ignore this development if they end up having a disappointing season.
