Caleb Williams received a unique opportunity to pick the brain of the greatest quarterback in NFL history on Sunday. Tom Brady spoke with the Chicago Bears prior to their massive rivalry game against the Green Bay Packers.
Their conversation lasted approximately 20 minutes, which is plenty of time to absorb first-hand information from a seven-time Super Bowl champion.
Williams was drafted No. 1 overall after winning a Heisman Trophy at USC. He has shown flashes of greatness but Chicago’s offense has been largely underwhelming. Its rookie quarterback has only thrown nine touchdowns (four in the same game) with five interceptions and completed less than 55% of his passes in four of his first nine starts.
The Bears ultimately decided to fire offensive coordinator Shane Waldron last week. However, they reportedly considered a change at the most important position on the field and briefly thought about benching Williams at the request of veterans on the team.
NFL inside Ian Rapoport gave additional context to that consideration on Sunday:
No. 1 overall pick Caleb Williams is still the starter and it will remain that way. Despite speculation to the contrary, the Bears did not nearly bench Williams ahead of Sunday’s game against the Packers.
Instead, as sources explained, the possibility of starting Tyson Bagent over Williams was brought up in a broader context during a meeting with team brass and several of the team’s leaders prior to Tuesday’s firing of OC Shane Waldron. The idea would have been to give Williams a break for a few games, similar to what the Panthers did with Bryce Young (the 2023 No. 1 overall pick) earlier this season.
Sitting Williams was never truly considered, but part of a thorough evaluation prior to Waldron’s dismissal.

Enough said! Williams is the guy.
With that in mind, Chicago’s quarterback room huddled together prior to kickoff against Green Bay. Brady, who is on the call for Fox, wandered over and decided to interrupt.

It is not uncommon for a broadcast announcer to chop it up on the field during pregame. However, the 47-year-old legend lingered beyond a casual conversation. Brady spoke with Williams, Tyson Bagent and Austin Reed for almost half an hour.

Although the conversation was kept private, Tom Brady revealed what he wants to see from Caleb Williams throughout the rest of his rookie season.
I think at this point in the season, it’s not like you’re going to make a lot of sweeping changes. I think you’re looking for minor improvements at this point.
— Tom Brady
The decision to change coordinators might help to provide a spark to the struggling offense, but Brady does not necessarily see the switch as a huge positive. He would usually prefer for a young quarterback to sit for a year or two during the developmental stage of his career. That is not an option for/with Williams at this point, so the focus is on the little things.
I would love to see Caleb make some minor improvements. Get rid of the ball a little quicker. He’s doing a good job of taking care of the ball, but help that offensive line out a little bit by getting that ball out of your hands.
— Tom Brady
Only time will tell whether Brady’s advice helps Williams to play better in the coming weeks. Either way, it was a cool moment between a superstar rookie and the greatest to ever do it!
