Josh Allen is currently the odds-on favorite to earn Most Valuable Player honors when the season wraps up. However, Lamar Jackson made things very interesting thanks to his performance on Christmas, and it’s hard not to wonder if the members of the Bills offensive line jumped the gun with the gift they got for their quarterback.
The NFL MVP race was firmly Josh Allen’s to lose heading in Week 16, as the Bills QB was listed as a -900 favorite ahead of Lamar Jackson, who was sitting in a fairly distant second at +550.
However, the picture got a bit more compelling after Jackson recorded 207 passing yards and threw three touchdowns while leading the Ravens to a 34-17 win over the Steelers a day before the Bills struggled to eke out a 24-21 win over the Patriots in a game where Allen was held to just 154 yards in the air and threw a lone touchdown.
The latter was still the man to beat on the betting front prior to the start of Week 17, but his odds dropped to -550 while Jackson (who is the reigning MVP after supplementing the one he secured for his performance in 2019 last season) saw his increase to +400.
Things took yet another intriguing turn thanks to what transpired on Christmas Day, as Jackson surpassed Michael Vick for the NFL’s all-time QB rushing record by racking up 87 yards and recording a score on the ground in a 31-2 victory over the Texans where he also had 168 passing yards and a couple of TDs in the air.
Jackson currently leads Allen in every major statistical category aside from rushing TDs, although the latter will have the chance to put a dent in those deficits when the Bills host the Jets on Sunday. There’s no telling what the MVP picture will look like once that game wraps up, but Jackson is now sitting at +180 thanks to a performance that saw Allen drop to -240.
However, the Bills offensive line seems to think their man has things in the bag when you consider Dion Dawkins posted a video of Allen showing off the custom MVP chain Buffalo’s big uglies got him for Christmas.

Allen still has a couple of games to ensure that present doesn’t end up aging poorly, but it does seem like it may have been a bit premature.
