The Atlanta Falcons escaped with a 15-9 win over the Las Vegas Raiders on Monday to improve to 7-7 on the season. A roughing the passer call late in the game is now being scrutinized.
Viewers are ripping NFL refs for costing the Raiders a chance to mount a comeback. The 15-yard penalty erased an opportunity to give the ball to the Las Vegas offense, allowing the Falcons to drain precious seconds from the clock.
The personal foul came with just under three minutes left in regulation. On a 3rd-and-4 play, defender Robert Spillane swatted a Kirk Cousins pass attempt away before making contact with the quarterback.
Referees believed he made forcible contact to the head and neck area. It seemed minimal to a number of fans.

Spillane jumped to successfully bat the ball down. He then did his best to avoid coming down directly on Cousins’ helmet. There wasn’t much more he could do!
The roughing the passer call turned what would’ve been a 4th-and-4 into a fresh set of downs. Instead of punting the ball back to the Raiders with 2:44 left to play, the Falcons’ offense stayed on the field.
Atlanta would run three more plays after the penalty, forcing the Raiders to use their final timeout. By the time Las Vegas got the ball back, they’d missed the two-minute warning stoppage, too.
Desmond Ridder moved the offense inside Falcons’ territory even without the ability to stop the clock. Unfortunately, he didn’t have enough time to score a touchdown. After snapping the ball at the 35-yard line, Ridder threw an interception as time expired.
