Over one 48 hour period last weekend, federal officers with U.S. Customs and Border Protection intercepted and seized over $3 million worth of narcotics that were trying to be smuggled into the United States. Both busts took place at the Hidalgo/Pharr/Anzalduas Port of Entry in Texas.

“Drug trafficking organizations don’t take holiday weekends off, and neither do we,” said Port Director Carlos Rodriguez, Hidalgo/Pharr/Anzalduas Port of Entry. “As these two significant narcotics interceptions aptly illustrate, CBP maintains its enforcement posture regardless of the time of year.”

The first drug seizure took place on Saturday, Nov. 30 when CBP officers assigned to the Hidalgo International Bridge selected a grey Chevrolet SUV for inspection. The vehicle, which was entering the United States from Mexico, was both physically inspected as well as examined utilizing non-intrusive inspection (NII) equipment.

During those inspections, CBP officers discovered 13 packages of alleged cocaine and heroin concealed within the vehicle. The 15.60 pounds of alleged heroin and 9.12 pounds of alleged cocaine had a combined estimated street value of $421,100.

The following day, CBP officers assigned to the Pharr International Bridge cargo facility in Texas pulled a tractor trailer making entry from Mexico over for a secondary inspection. Again, using non-intrusive inspection (NII) equipment and physically inspecting the tractor trailer resulted in the discovery of illegal narcotics.

80 packages of alleged cocaine weighing 196.21 pounds were found to be hidden among the tractor trailer’s shipment of peppers. The seized narcotics in this case had an estimated street value of $2,619,800.

These narcotics seizures took place just a short time after U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Office of Field Operations officers at the Hidalgo International Bridge seized $1.4 million worth of alleged cocaine, weapons, and ammunition at the Texas-Mexico border.

“Our CBP officers don’t skip a beat when it comes to keeping our country safe. These back-to-back interceptions of weapons, ammunition, and narcotics illustrate the tireless work being done at our port of entry,” said Port Director Carlos Rodriguez.
