It’s been a few months since Adrian Wojnarowski dropped a very unexpected Woj Bomb when he announced he was bringing his career as an NBA insider to an end. Now, we have some new insight into that development as well as some promising news about the cancer diagnosis that played a small role in his decision.
Adrian Wojnarowski spent more than 15 years subjecting himself to the endless grind you need to endure to become the preeminent source for the juicy NBA scoops that made him famous, but on September 18th, the veteran journalist made a pretty stunning announcement when he revealed he’d decided to bring that chapter of his career to an end.
The man commonly referred to as “Woj” initially made a name for himself by breaking countless stories during his time at Yahoo Sports before taking his talents to ESPN, a network that was paying him more than $7 million a year to do what he did best.
In the post where he shared the news, the 55-year-old hinted at the reasons he’d opted to pivot by accepting a job as the general manager for the men’s basketball team at St. Bonaventure, a position where he’s making around 1% of his previous salary based on a new Sports Illustrated article that provides a ton of new perspective into his choice to embark on a new journey.
Woj understandably cited burnout as the primary reason he opted to begin a new chapter, and there are a number of anecdotes that make it easy to understand why he moved on; former Warriors GM Bob Myers said the insider held back tears while telling him “I don’t think I can do this anymore” ahead of the most recent NBA Draft, and his son bluntly told him “I think your job f—ing sucks” when he floated the idea of retirement.
The aforementioned retirement announcement also included the line “Time isn’t in endless supply,” which Woj says was in reference to the prostate cancer diagnosis he received right before going on air on ESPN back in March. Thankfully, the growth was detected in the early stages and is “pretty limited in scope,” and doctors told him the only reason they’d recommend surgery at this time is if he can’t deal with the mental stress of knowing he has it.
It also appears Woj has settled in pretty nicely since linking up with the Bonnies, and it’s safe to say he’s more than earned the right to take it much easier than he was before.
