Diego Pavia led the Vanderbilt Commodores to their first winning season since 2013 with a Birmingham Bowl win on Friday night. The electrifying college football quarterback celebrated the monumental victory by smoking a cigar in the locker room.
His postgame stogie did not go over well with fun-hating losers— mostly Tennessee fans.
It cannot be understate what Pavia did for the perennial basement-dwelling program in Nashville. Vandy has won seven or more games in a single season just 31 times since its first college football season in 1902, 123 years ago. The Dores have only four winning seasons since 1985.
Pavia immediately lit a spark in Music City after he transferred into the program during the offseason. He led Vanderbilt to a monumental upset win over Alabama and won seven games for the first time in more than a decade. And it’s not like it was easy!
Deigo Pavia is a DOG.
As an unranked recruit out of high school, Pavia worked his way up to the SEC with stops at the New Mexico Military Institute and New Mexico State. He may not be the best passer in college football. He may not be as fast as guys like Michael Vick or even someone current like Tyler Huff, Devon Dampier, Parker Navarro or Blake Horvath.
The 5-foot-11, 207-pound quarterback plays with reckless abandon. Pavia puts his body on line, played through multiple injuries, and will do whatever it takes to win— even sizing up a 6-foot-6, 265-pound defensive lineman as the leader blocker in Birmingham on Friday afternoon.

All of this goes to say that Diego Pavia means more to this Vanderbilt program than outsiders will ever understand. The Commodores love him like family. A 7-6 season with a bowl win is a huge deal.
Pavia smoked a cigar in the locker room to celebrate the momentous occasion. It was well deserved.

However, the haters came out of the woodwork to bash his behavior. They mocked him for smoking a cigar after finishing just one game above .500. Others pointed to Joe Burrow and how he lit one up after winning a national championship versus the Birmingham Bowl.
“This is so sad” — @TonyVille22
“Dudes smoking a cigar for going 7-6 I’m dead ” — @Volinquent_
“Birmingham Bowl and aura shouldn’t be in the same post” — @dcham2224
“Haha lighting a cigar after the Birmingham bowl … that’s pretty sad …. Hahahahahahahahahaha” — @RonBuch42457233
“I hate being embarrassed for others.” — @WRLDWIDEWEBBER
“would’ve been tuff if he did this after beating bama not winning the birmingham bowl.” — @osufb29
“This gotta be the most embarrassing thing I’ve ever seen lol” — @7Volfin
“Buddy won the Birmingham bowl and thinks he’s 2019 Joe Burrow ” — @FinanceWolf777
Most of the people who criticized Diego Pavia for having fun and celebrating his accomplishments are fans of the Volunteers. They allowed their in-state rival to live rent-free in their heads less than a week after their team got blown out in the College Football Playoff. That’s loser mentality!
