As UConn jumped out to an early lead over North Carolina in the Fenway Bowl, a famous famous foul pole at the Boston Red Sox’s legendary MLB stadium lived up to its name. A giant yellow line covered a significant portion of the college football broadcast for viewers at home.
Even though it is always cool to see bowl matchups played at unique and historic venues, those games always come with their challenges when the stadium is not properly fit for the sport.
In this specific instance, Fenway Park hosted the Tar Heels and Huskies on Saturday morning. The iconic stadium was built in 1912. Never once did the architects of more than a century ago consider the idea that an 8-4 college football team would one day play a postseason exhibition game against a 6-6 opponent on the grounds. It was designed for baseball.
However, there is actually a history of football at Fenway Park between Boston College, the Boston Bulldogs of the AFL and now the Wasabi Fenway Bowl. The field is positioned down the first base line.

That creates a problem for ESPN. A foul pole blocks its cameras whenever an offense is driving toward or away from right field.

Ironically, the pole is named Pesky’s Pole after Red Sox legend Johnny Pesky. It just so happens to be extremely pesky for the broadcast of the Fenway Bowl. You can’t see the entire play!
Pesky’s Pole at one point blocked the entire North Carolina backfield.
To make matters worse, the field itself was completely destroyed less than 15 minutes into the game.
College football fans at home were not thrilled by the Fenway Bowl viewing experience. However, they should instead enjoy the hilarity of a bowl game played at a baseball stadium. Pesky’s Pole is part of the fun!
