The University of Vermont men’s soccer team made history on Monday night after defeating Marshall. The UVM Catamounts scored an electric 1v1 golden goal in overtime with about 5 minutes left on the clock to win the program’s first-ever national championship.
This was a pretty even matchup for most of the game. It was tied 0-0 at the half after both teams were robbed of close scoring opportunities. Then it was Marshall who scored first to take a 1-0 lead in the 67th minuted with a goal from Tarik Pannholzer. Vermont‘s Marcell Papp was then able to find the back of the net to tie it up in the 81st minute after a Marshall defender failed to clear the ball.
From there, the game went to overtime and with barely 5 minutes left on the clock until going to a shootout, and the Golden Goal Rule in effect, Vermont’s Maximilian Kissel scored the biggest goal in UVM history. It came off a long ball up the right where the defender tried to clear the ball and missed, falling to the ground in the process. That created the 1v1 matchup between Maximilian Kissel and the Marshall keeper.
Here’s that moment and the biggest goal in University of Vermont men’s soccer history:
Gracious as they are, the NCAA uploaded a 9m28s video of highlights from Vermont soccer’s first-ever national championship win. For those who weren’t able to watch it live or want to see more of the action, check it out:
Not only was this Vermont Soccer’s first-ever national championship title, this was the first time in NCAA history a team from the America East conference made a national championship game or won a national championship. So they made conference history as well as school history.
Vermont soccer had 13 shots and 7 shots on goal throughout the game but they only needed those 2 special SOGs to win it all. The Catamounts finished the season 12-2-6 overall and 4-1-2 in conference play.
During the NCAA Tournament, they faced and beat Iona (5-0), Hofstra (2-1), San Diego (1-0, OT), Pitt (2-0), Denver, (1-1, 4-3 on PKs), and of course, Marshall (2-1, OT). That is a LONG haul for Vermont but they emerged victorious. Big ups go out to the Catamounts for their first ever Natty! Hopefully they can make another deep run next year and bring some prestige to the America East conference.
