New York Yankees fans have had a tough time swallowing the fact that Juan Soto chose the blue pinstripes of the New York Mets over the navy pinstripes of the Yankees, as virtually the entire fanbase — and even the team’s announcer — have been melting down all week.
During an episode of his radio show, Michael Kay, who serves as the team’s play-by-play announcer, got so worked up about Juan Soto signing with the Mets that he framed his decision as being “piggish.”
The crux of Kay’s argument comes from reports that the Yankees refused to give Soto a free suite for his family, which is something the Mets immediately agreed to do for him at Citi Field.
The reverse side of that coin is the Yankees potentially lost out on a Hall of Fame player entering his prime due to outdated traditions such as players paying for suites or not being allowed to have facial hair.
“When you’re getting a contract worth $765 million, and I’m not going to use this word lightly, to ask for a suite, borders on piggish,” Kay said on his YES Network and ESPN New York radio show (22:28 mark).
In a clip that went viral on social media, Kay also argued that if the moribund Miami Marlins offered Soto the most money, then he would’ve signed a contract with them.

The outrage from Kay and Yankees fans in general regarding Soto “following the money” is preposterously hypocritical, even if it is accurate — which we’ll honestly never know unless Soto outright says, “Yes, I did it for the money.”
The Yankees, while undeniably one of the most iconic franchises in sports, built their legacy on their ability to outspend other teams — when they resigned Alex Rodriguez in 2007, the 10-year, $275 million extension they gave him was the largest contract in the history of Major League Baseball.
