Jay Norvell is not the only college football coach who is directly familiar with the predatory behavior of sketchy NIL agents. However, he is the only one to lay out exactly what is going on behind the scenes on a public platform.
Other coaches have complained, but Norvell provided a detailed breakdown of the process for which they are complaining and specifically went after the agents.
As things currently stand, there is a severe lack of regulation in when it comes to Name, Image and Likeness (which has become pay-for-play) and the transfer portal. College football players essentially become a free agent at the end of every single season. They can leave their current program, hop in the portal and field financial offers from potential suitors at a moment’s notice. There are no rules!
Colorado State quarterback Brayden Fowler-Nicolosi was supposedly offered $600,000 to transfer last offseason. Star wide receiver Tory Horton received a similar bribe to leave the Rams.
Neither player entered the transfer portal at any point in time. They were illegally approached by bigger programs. It is the definition of tampering.
NIL “agents” are out of control in college football.
Norvell is sick and tired of the current system, but he is more concerned for the players. Independent agents shop around on an athlete’s behalf without the athlete’s knowledge. Those independent agents only approach the athletes (typically through a DM on social media) once they have already fielded offers.
These kids are not thinking about getting into the portal, but when they have these people calling them and say, “if you get in the portal, I’ll get you $200,000.” And by the way… I’m going to take 15-20% of that.
— Jay Norvell
Some of these “agents” are not licensed. Others do not have any professional experience. And yet, they are taking a monster chunk of their clients’ earnings in a manner that is not comparable to the pros.
So they’re just stealing from these kids. An NFLPA agent gets 3%. A lot of these agents that are talking to all of our players, they are taking 10%, 15% or even 20%. That’s really… criminal, really, but that is what is going on in college football.
— Jay Norvell
Norvell and his staff in Fort Collins try to educate their players on the exploitative behavior of these sketchy agents but money can be blinding.
As much as we try to tell our players that, and educate them, when someone is offering you that kind of money, it’s still hard for these kids.
— Jay Norvell
This not a minor issue that only impacts a few guys on the top teams. It is happening everywhere, with everyone.
We talked to our top 26 kids, and they ALL have been offered, a lot of money.
— Jay Norvell
Needless to say, something needs to change. Jay Norvell can only say so much.

These agents need to be stopped. There needs to be legislature in place to prevent this predation.
