The Tulane football team has been hit hard by the transfer portal following a nine-win regular season and appearance in the AAC Championship Game. It’s now created an awkward dynamic in the QB room.
Starter Darian Mensah hit the portal last week as soon as the winter transfer window opened. That window happens to open up before teams square off in their postseason bowl games.
Reserve Ty Thompson was then elevated to QB1 for a Gasparilla Bowl meeting with the Florida Gators. He’s planning to play even though he, too, is in the transfer portal.
Head coach Jon Sumrall commented on that situation with his team continuing to prep for its December 20th matchup.
Tulane QB Ty Thompson has entered the transfer portal. He will also start for the Green Wave against Florida in the Gasparilla Bowl.
Tulane HC @CoachJonSumrall broke down their conversation & his team’s QB situation. He was very complimentary of Thompson.

Ty Thompson is an interesting quarterback prospect. He spent three seasons at Oregon before moving on to Tulane. With the Green Wave, he’s been used mainly as a rushing threat.
This year, the QB racked up six touchdowns on the ground while averaging more than six yards per carry. He only threw the ball 11 times in his 11 appearances, totaling 74 yards. He’s not the prototypical drop back passer.
With that in mind, Coach Sumrall mentioned the possibility of a position change moving into 2025. He also noted that Tulane will go after multiple QBs in the transfer portal this offseason. It was far from a guarantee that he’d be the starting quarterback next season.
If Thompson wants to continue playing under center, a transfer out of Tulane may be his best bet. His head coach said as much in conversations with his signal caller. He was almost encouraged to weigh his portal options.
With all of that being said, Ty Thompson plans to play in the bowl game. It very well could be his last appearance with the Green Wave. It’s an interesting situation made possible by the odd timing of the transfer portal window.
