Arizona State running back Cam Skattebo will be the first person to take himself out of a college football game if he has any concerns about a possible concussion. His unusual head shake after almost every play is not an indication of an injury, nor is it cause for concern.
The 22-year-old picked up the unique twitch long before he arrived to Tempe but it became a very prominent part of his pre- and post-snap behavior over the last 12 months or so.
Skattebo, a true fourth-year senior, joined head coach Kenny Dillingham at Arizona State in 2023 after two years at Sacramento State. He was good last year. He is great this year.
At 5-foot-11, 215 pounds, Skattebo is impossible to bring down. It’s as if you were to try and tackle a giant bouncy ball made of knives. Unmatched contact balance is the primary catalyst for Skattebo’s success but his giant head and large frame certainly help. Pat McAfee is a big fan.

A large number of casual college football fans got their first taste of Cam Skattebo during the Big 12 Championshipy. They could not understand why he shakes his head back and ford after every single play and expressed their confusion on social media. Some of them assumed it was related to a head injury.
“Why does Skattebo always, always shake his head after EVERY play? #CollegeFootball” — @BeW1se
“Does Skattebo have some sort of tick or shake his head a lot like I keep seeing?” — @CyowaSt8
“I can’t tell if Skattebo is shaking his head cause he has a concussion or if he’s just insane” — @PrinceAliNBA
“Genuine question.. is Cam Skattebo is on drugs?? Why is his head shaking every 3-4 seconds super rapidly? Drug test this man..” — @averageisufan
“Pretty confident they should be checking out Skattebo for a concussion – he’s been shaking his head nonstop since the second play of the game – but he just keeps rolling through people” — @BayouBillButler
“Does this Skattebo guy have Tourette’s or something? Keeps shaking his head anytime he’s on camera” — @Burrelly25
“Skattebo shaking his head a lot…like the hits are adding ” — @SprgfldBill09
“After every play where he’s contacted, Skattebo gets up shaking his head back and forth… noticed it earlier. Something to watch…” — @jballew_horns26
That same confusion carried into the New Year when Arizona State played Texas in the College Football Playoff at the Peach Bowl. New fans were concerned that he was dealing with a potential concussion.
Although it is a logical hypothesis, Skattebo’s head shake has nothing to do with the collisions. Well, it does, but it doesn’t. Not for the reason you might think!
Cam Skattebo’s helmet used to stick to his head before he wore his hair longer and had a beard. The helmet would drive him insane if it was out of place so he would shake his head to let it loose. That was how the head shake started. It has since become more of an OCD-type tick.
It’s been asked a million times, why does Cam Skattebo shake his head so often during the game?

New Arizona State viewers should have no fear. The head shake is not related to a concussion or any kind of discomfort. Welcome to the Cam Skattebo experience!
