BYU Head Coach Accused Of Tampering With Utah Football Players During Suspicious Handshakes

BYU head coach Kalani Sitake shook two very specific hands after a one-point win over Utah in the Holy War at the beginning of November. Coincidentally, Carsen Ryan and Keanu Tanuvasa both transferred across enemy lines not longthereafter.

Is it a coincidence or is this a direct example of the widespread tampering in college football? We may never know the answer…

Ryan, a former three-star recruit in the Class of 2022, was ranked one of the 10-best players in the Beehive State and initially committed to play at UCLA. Two years later, he hit the transfer portal and played the 2024 season closer to home at the University of Utah.

Although Ryan’s numbers are not that impressive, the Utes offense was terrible so he never really got an opportunity to succeed. Sitake must think the 6-foot-4, 256-pound tight end can play a bigger role with the Cougars because he accepted his commitment out of the transfer portal earlier this month.

Tanuvasa is an even bigger get, literally. The 6-foot-4, 301-pound defensive tackle made four tackles for Utah against BYU. Sitake must’ve liked what he saw from the rising junior because he also made the flip from the Utes to the Cougars through the transfer portal.

It is not uncommon for college football players to switch allegiance in the state of Utah. The Holy War often sees transfers on both sides of the rivalry. However, the circumstances surrounding these two specific players are suspicious.

As soon as the clock hit zero on Nov. 9, BYU head coach Kalani Sitake immediately walked over to Tanuvasa and Ryan. They were the first two players people with whom he interacted.

Now two months later, both Keanu Tanuvasa and Carsen Ryan are committed to play for Sitake in Provo after leaving Salt Lake City via transfer portal. Coincidence? Perhaps. Tampering? Maybe…
