The New York Jets turned to veteran backup quarterback Tyrod Taylor late in the fourth quarter of their 40-14 Week 17 loss to the Buffalo Bills. According to starting quarterback Aaron Rodgers, however, Taylor getting into the game was his idea.

Speaking to the media after the Jets got blown out by the Buffalo Bills by a score of 40-14, the controversial 41-year-old Jets QB said that the idea to put journeyman Tyrod Taylor in the game came from his suggestion.

Prior to his apparent self-benching, Rodgers completed 12 of 18 passes for 112 yards and two picks, bringing his 2024 stat line to 3,623 yards for 24 touchdowns and 10 interceptions in 16 games.

When asked by a reporter “What the conversation was like when [interim head coach] Jeff Ulbrich” took him out of the game in favor of the 35-year-old Taylor, Rodgers made clear that the move came from him, not Ulbrigh.

“I mean it was 33-0, we were sitting there & I said, ‘At some point, probably go to Tyrod [Taylor] here, huh?’ Then the next play [the Bills] threw a screen for a touchdown. So it was 40-0,” Rodgers told the media after the 40-14 loss, which dropped the Jets’ record on the season to 4-12.

Tyrod Taylor’s brief stint as the Jets’ starting quarterback perhaps showed Jets fans what they’ve been missing all season, as the veteran quarterback was exceedingly effective during his modicum of playing time, as he completed 11 of 14 passes (79%) for 83 yards, two touchdowns (the only points the Jets scored) and zero interceptions, which is good for a QB rating of 131.

At this time, despite being under contract with the Jets for the 2025 season, his future with the team is uncertain, with all signs pointing toward a split between the pair after two disastrous seasons.
