The Duke Blue Devils took down ACC rival NC State on Monday night in Durham, 74-64. The end of that contest was filled with wild scenes, few of which related to the game itself.

Things went off the rails with just under five minutes left in regulation. The Blue Devils led 63-62.

As Duke attempted to build on that lead, an offensive series was interrupted after big man Khaman Maluach began vomiting under the basket. He was forced to the sidelines after getting sick. Luckily, he wouldn’t be needed.

The Blue Devils ended the game on an 11-2 run to win by 10 points. Cooper Flagg’s 23 second half points helped the home team overcome an early deficit.

After the game, head coach Jon Scheyer provided an update on Khaman Maluach. He also gave the reasoning for his surprise sickness.

“He was having issues cramping, and he chugged a lot of Gatorade. That’s what happened when he threw up… He was doing whatever he could to get back in the game. Obviously, he drank too much. He felt better after the game.”

-Jon Scheyer

That wouldn’t be the end of the madness, though. Soon after Maluach’s illness, a Duke fan had to be carried out of the arena. She appeared to have passed out soon after witnessing the on-court vomiting.

Maluach exited the contest with 4:21 left in regulation. The fan was escorted out at the 3:30 mark. Less than a minute of gametime passed between the incidents.

Luckily, the fan seems to be okay. She reportedly walked out of the venue under her own power after receiving medical attention.

For those concerned about the student who appeared to pass out during the NC State-Duke game, I’m told by a school spokesperson that she’s doing OK and she walked out of the arena on her own after receiving medical attention.

The cause of that situation is unclear. To see two bizarre exits from the floor in such a short time was unexpected, to say the least. Given the postgame updates, everyone appears to be fine in their recovery processes.

Duke improved to 18-2 on the year. Hopefully, Khaman Maluach will be back in the lineup this Saturday when the Blue Devils host North Carolina, and hopefully the fan will be back in attendance to root the squad on.
