Ed Cooley did not receive a warm welcome in his return to Providence College on Saturday. The Friars were absolutely ruthless toward their former college basketball coach.
They berated him with profanity as soon as he showed face inside the arena.
Cooley, 55, spent 12 years as the head coach at Providence from 2011-2022. He decided to leave his hometown for Georgetown on March 20, 2023. It was the first time in 44 years that a Big East school poached another Big East coach.
As could be expected, his (somewhat lateral) move did not go over well with the Friars. Cooley immediately became public enemy No. 1 in the Renaissance City. That continues to be true. The Friars absolutely hate him with their entire heart.
Thus, it was a very big deal when Georgetown played at Providence for the second time since Cooley’s departure. Fans mercilessly booed him during his traitorous return last season and this year was no difference.
Providence hates Ed Cooley.
Students started to lineup for entry into Amica Mutual Pavilion in the freezing cold before 8:00 a.m. for a game that was scheduled to tip off 30 minutes after noon. They packed into the arena for warmups.
More than 75% of the student section was packed shoulder-to-shoulder by 8:15 a.m, more than four hours prior to the game. Only one person was on their mind and they wanted to make it abundantly clear that he was unwelcome.
Cooley finally showed his face around 10:45 a.m. He was met at first by a chorus of boos.
Chants of “F— Ed Cooley” broke out not long thereafter.

Needless to say, Ed Cooley is not well-liked at Providence. Georgetown’s head coach knew he was in for a long afternoon as soon as he entered his former gym. The Friars have had this game circled since the day it was announced. They were out for blood!
