Kelly McKee is the best triple jumper in University of Virginia history. Although her goal is to one day compete for Team USA at the Olympics, she recently embarked on a new quest for glory.
The 27-year-old wants to dunk a basketball and will not stop until she slams one home.
McKee, a two-time NCAA All-American, is currently four years removed from a highly-decorated career with the Cavaliers. She recorded the program’s best triple jump finish at the NCAA Championships in 2019 and was named as an All-American in the event as a junior and senior. She also competed for the United States at the Pan American Games and at the Olympic Trials last summer.
McKee is listed at 5-foot-7, 120 pounds. A regulation hoop is 10 feet tall. The Kansas-native needs to record a vertical jump of approximately three feet to be able to dunk. More or less…
While that might seem like an impossible task for someone of her size, McKee is not that far off without any formal training. Her first baseline attempt was a great success. She is already touching the rim!
This is also not a new goal for McKee. Other more important things got in the way, like training the Olympics. However, she was just inches away from throwing down a volleyball as recently as 2023.
Her attempt at an alley-oop one year ago was equally as impressive.
A lot of people who think they know better were quick to criticize Kelly McKee for jumping off of one foot instead of two. The haters don’t think she can get it done.
As a triple jumper, McKee is a firm believer in the one-footed takeoff. It is what she knows and it has led her to this point. Now, with the goal of dunking in mind, the best jumper in Virginia history needs to add a few more inches to her leap!
