The Rhode Island baseball team took down William & Mary on Sunday afternoon in the opening series of the NCAA season. The two teams nearly made history in the process.

The sides combined to score 58 runs. It was the fourth-highest output in Division 1 history. Making the feat all the more impressive is the fact that the game was called early.

Rhode Island led by 14 runs after seven innings of play. The NCAA run rule, which is most often applied in non-conference play, allows contests to end early should one side by up by double digits after the seventh frame.

The Rams led 36-22 at the time of the decision. Those 58 runs were just four shy of the all-time record.

According to the NCAA website, the highest-scoring game in Division 1 history was played between Denver and Air Force in 1968. Denver won the matchup, 33-29, as the two teams combined for 62 runs.

This game was on pace to obliterate that mark! At 58 runs through seven innings, the teams were averaging more than eight runs a frame. When expanded across nine innings, that run total could’ve approached 75 at the same rate.

And there’s no reason to believe the scoring would’ve stopped. Neither team had a pitcher complete two innings. Both were deep into the bullpen when the game ended. The offenses combined to hit .500 (40-for-80) with nine home runs.

The bullpen usage in the series finale likely played a part in ending the game early. Unfortunately, it robbed players of an opportunity to write their names in the record books.

With the win, Rhode Island improved to 2-1 in the college baseball season. William & Mary fell to 1-2. Both sides will next take the field in midweek action before gearing up for their second weekend series.
