Typically when a new fishing world record is set it breaks the previous record by a few ounces, maybe a pound or two. But a massive cobia caught in Western Australia is set to break the previous IGFA fishing world record for the cobia species by a whopping 40 pounds!

Angler Koby Duncan was fishing off Rottnest Island which sits just offshore from Perth when he hooked up with the fish of a lifetime. The previous IGFA fishing world record for cobia sits at 135 lb 9 oz (61.5 kg). Cobia are a pelagic species of fish and can be caught all over the globe but the previously world record was coincidentally also caught in Western Australia way back in 1985.

Flash forward 40 years and a new fishing world record has raised the bar by 40 pounds. Jazz fishing charters crewman Harley Jarosz shared details of Koby Duncan’s record-setting cobia on social media which was weighed at the Perth Game Fishing Club on their certified scale where it tipped the scales at 79.6 KG or 175.49 pounds, an absolute beast of a fish.

A 50-pound cobia puts up an incredible fight. I cannot even wrap my brain around what landing a 175+ pound cobia would be like.

On Instagram, Harley Jarosz who works on the boat where Koby Duncan landed the fish shared details about the new cobia world record including what they were fishing with and how the battle went down. Jarosz says they were fishing with 25lb tackle and the battle only lasted 25 minutes before they got the new record cobia into the boat. Here is a video of the cobia once they landed it:

The setup was a Shimano Saragosa 6000 reel, Oceans Legacy Casting Inshore Element Pe 3 rod, Pandora 30lb line from Nomad Tackle, a jighead and 7″ jerkbait from TT Fishing.

Not only is this 175+ pound cobia a new fishing world record by 40 pounds, it also doubles as an Australian record and a Western Australia specific fishing record. This angler will basically get to fill a trophy cabinet in one fell swoop from landing this single fish. Absolutely incredible stuff.

As mentioned above, one of the cool things about the cobia fish species is they are pelagic and can be caught all around the world. I’ve been catching cobia here in Florida all my life and when they show up it often means there are some other cool species in the area as they often travel with manta rays or whale sharks.

Another extremely fun way to fish for them is sight fishing around Hilton Head as these fish spawn there and sit right up on the surface. You can look for tiny rips in the water as their dorsal fins skim the surface and sight cast to them. I went out on a charter a few years back where we did that and it was a top notch day of cobia fishing.

In order to certify this as a new fishing world record, the angler will now need to submit the proper paperwork. But weighing the fish on a certified scale was the hard part. Everything from here on out is a mere formality.
