Indiana Fever superstar Caitlin Clark made an estimated $11.1 million in 2024, which made her one of the top-earning female athletes on the planet. But only a minuscule amount of that income came via her WNBA salary and bonuses, which came out to around $100,000, despite her being the No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 draft and becoming arguably the face of the league.
Even if the Fever decided to hand Clark a maximum contract immediately, the most they could pay her is $208,219 under the league’s current CBA. By comparison, the NBA’s minimum salary for the 2024-25 season is $1,157,153. Safe to say, Clark is extremely undervalued, and her agent made that abundantly clear in a recent interview with ESPN.
“Will Caitlin Clark ever be paid by the WNBA what she’s really worth to that league? I don’t think that’s possible,” Clark’s angent Erin Kane said.
But Kane doesn’t just represent Clark. In fact, she represents several of the league’s top stars, including reining WNBA MVP runner-up Napheesa Collier and Dallas Wings star Arike Ogunbowale, both of whom Kane says are underpaid.
“(Clark)’s part of a larger player body. They all need to be paid more. She should be recognized for what she has done and what she’s brought to the league from an economic standpoint. It’s as simple as that,” Kane noted. “…”The most important thing always has been getting WNBA players paid for what they do on the court. I’m very, very hopeful for this CBA negotiation that it will be progressive and move the line forward a lot.”
Clark will never want for money, most likely. She made nearly $11 million in endorsement deals alone in 2024, and that number could well continue to rise. But it’s clear her on-court performance and value to the WNBA far outweighs what they can pay her.
The WNBA and its players association are currently in negotiations over a new CBA. In all likelihood, the new agreement will see salaries take a fairly significant jump. But unless max contracts disappear, as Kane said it’s unlikely she’ll ever actually be paid her worth on the court.
