Formula 1 Comes Up With Laughable Solution To Fix Lack Of Passing At Monaco Grand Prix

2024 Formula 1 Monaco Grand Prix

The Monaco Grand Prix is considered by and large the crown jewel of the Formula 1 racing series. The race through the famous principality began in 1929 and sports a who’s who on its list of winners. To be a legend in Formula 1, you must first win in Monaco. Ayrton Senna won the race a record six times, Michael Schumacher five and Lewis Hamilton three, while Ferrari star Charles Leclerc became the first Monegasque since Louis Chiron in 1931 to win the race this past season.

But the race has lost its luster in recent years. Larger cars have may it virtually impossible to pass on the narrow streets and the pole sitter has won the race the overwhelming majority of times this century.

The FIA, which serves at the governing body for Formula 1, recently discussed plans to liven up the race. But the solution they came up with is nothing short of a band aid, at best.

“Furthermore, with the aim of promoting better racing at the Monaco Grand Prix, the commission discussed proposals for Monaco-specific regulations,” the FIA stated in a press release. “The commission agreed to increase the numbers of mandatory pit stops in the Race. These proposals will be further discussed by the Sporting Advisory Committee in the coming weeks.”

Formula 1 rules currently state that all drivers must pit at least one time per race (assuming dry conditions) and use at least two of the provided tire compounds in each race. The newly proposed rule, which is Monaco-specific, would see drivers forced to pit at least twice.

However, it’s unclear how this would change the on-track product. The root of the issue is that modern Formula 1 cars are simply too large for the streets of Monaco. While they can fit side-by-side at a few spots on track, those spots rarely present legitimate opportunities to pass.

Mandating an additional pit stop will not change that. It simply introduces additional elements of chaos that could occur in the pits. As one fan put it, it’s like putting a lipstick on a pig. It’s hard to fault the FIA for trying. But this move doesn’t actually address the issue at hand.
