In news that almost doesn’t seem real, two men were arrested for attempting to smuggle meth and tobacco into a prison by using a cannon to launch the items over the wall. And it wasn’t just a little meth and tobacco that they tried to shoot into the prison, it was $89,500 worth of methamphetamine and $112,000 worth of tobacco.

Both men, from of Greely, Colorado, were attempting to smuggle the contraband into U.S. Penitentiary Pollock, a high-security federal prison for male inmates located approximately 15 miles north of Alexandria in central Louisiana. For their efforts, Jose Francisco Herrera Munoz, 18, and Angel Gonzales Gutierrez, 19, were each arrested and charged with one count each of attempting to introduce contraband into a penal institution and one count each of attempting to distribute methamphetamine.

According to a news release published by the Grant Parish Sheriff’s Office in Louisiana, “Their plan was to use the cannon that is propelled by compressed air, to launch the items over a security fence onto the grounds of the Federal Prison. The cannon has a range of shooting items over 350 feet.”

“Thanks to a very observant deputy, he was able to stop it before they were able to get the drugs into the prison. That much meth would have just been devastating in that population,” Grant Parish Sheriff Steven McCain told the Louisiana Radio Network.

McCain added that the cannon was pretty high tech. “This was not something that was homemade. It was bought, and it was professionally manufactured, and it’s very powerful,” he said. They should have used a pigeon.

Among the most high profile current inmates at U.S. Penitentiary Pollock are Khalid Ali-M Aldawsari, who is serving a life sentence for a foiled bomb plot targeting former President George W. Bush at his Dallas, Texas residence. Convicted murderer Richard Lee McNair, who has somehow escaped from prison three different times, once escaped from U.S. Penitentiary Pollock in 2006. He is now being housed at United States Penitentiary, McCreary in Kentucky.
