U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents have been very busy over the past week, as multiple drug busts conducted in Texas and California led to the seizure of more than $3.4 million worth of narcotics. The busts resulted in the seizures of almost 19 pounds of fentanyl, over 141 pounds of meth and more than 218 pounds of cocaine.

The first drug bust took place on February 15 when CBP agents assigned to the Anzalduas International Bridge in Texas encountered a Chevrolet SUV making entry into the United States from Mexico. After a CBP officer selected the vehicle for secondary inspection utilizing non-intrusive inspection (NII) equipment and screening by a canine team, they discovered 20 packages of alleged cocaine weighing 46.16 pounds concealed within the vehicle.

Just a few hours later on the same day, CBP officers assigned to the Hidalgo International Bridge in Texas encountered a black Nissan sedan making entry from Mexico. Using the same inspection tools, the agents were able to extract a total of 12 packages of alleged cocaine weighing 29.45 pounds hidden within the car.

A few days later, on February 18, U.S. Border Patrol agents from the San Diego Sector in California intercepted and seized over 160 pounds of illicit drugs during vehicle stops. One of the seizures took place when agents pulled over a suspicious vehicle traveling north near the San Clemente Border Patrol Checkpoint. The second occurred when agents stopped a vehicle at the Interstate 15 Temecula Border Patrol Checkpoint in Temecula.

In the first bust, agents used a Border Patrol canine unit to locate packages consistent with smuggled narcotics in an aftermarket compartment in the floorboard of the vehicle. They ended up removing a total of 55 cellophane-wrapped packages weighing 142.96 pounds that tested positive for cocaine. The estimated street value of the narcotics was more than $1.1 million.

In the second vehicle stop, a canine unit alerted agents to the presence of eight bundles of narcotics in a backpack on the floorboard of the vehicle. The bundles were tested and weighed and ended up being 18.51 pounds of fentanyl valued at approximately $143,000.

“These seizures underscore San Diego Sector’s unwavering commitment to protecting our communities from the dangers of illicit narcotics,” said San Diego Sector Acting Chief Patrol Agent Jeffrey D. Stalnaker. “The successful interdiction of these drugs highlights the effectiveness of our Border Patrol agents and K-9 teams in the fight against these criminal organizations.”

Then, on February 22, CBP agents at the Eagle Pass Port of Entry in Texas seized more than $1,200,000 in narcotics in a single law enforcement action. That seizure occurred at the Camino Real International Bridge when an officer referred a 2016 Nissan Murano for secondary inspection.

Using a CBP canine and a non-intrusive inspection system officers discovered 64 packages containing a total of 141.09 pounds of alleged methamphetamine within the floor and center console of the vehicle. The narcotics had an estimated street value of $1,297,408.

“Officers in the passenger environment [an area where passengers, vehicles, pedestrians are inspected by CBP officers] interdicted and seized more than a million dollars in alleged methamphetamine,” said Port Director Pete Beattie, Eagle Pass Port of Entry. “CBP remains committed to its border security mission while effectively facilitating lawful trade and travel.”
