NASCAR Driver Chase Briscoe Officially Has Negative 67 Points After Daytona 500 Catastrophy

The 2025 NASCAR Cup Series season was supposed to represent an opportunity to turn over a new leaf for Chase Briscoe. Briscoe, 30, spent the first four seasons of his Cup career with Stewart-Haas racing. But despite a strong sophomore campaign in 2022, he never really found his footing and spent most of his time running mid-pack.

This season, however, presented a chance for something new. Stewart-Haas Racing shut down operations following the 2024 season, making Briscoe a free agent. He then signed with powerhouse Joe Gibbs Racing to take over the No. 19 car vacated by the retiring Martin Truex Jr.

The move immediately paid dividends as Briscoe sat on the pole for the Daytona 500, announcing himself as a serious threat for the season to come. He went on to finish in fourth place in the race. Unfortunately, he didn’t get to keep the points, or the momentum, for very long.

Chase Briscoe Handed Massive Penalty For Using Illegally Altered Part At Daytona 500

NASCAR hammered Briscoe with a massive penalty on Wednesday for what they deemed was an illegally altered part on his car. The penalty cost Briscoe 100 points as well as 10 playoff points. NASCAR also suspended crew chief James Small for four races.

Joe Gibbs Racing announced its intent to appeal the penalty on Wednesday evening.

“The issue in question was caused in the assembly process when bolts used to attach the spoiler base to the deck lid caused the pre-drilled holes to wear due to supplied part interferences,” the statement read.

Should the appeal fail, Briscoe and JGR begin the new season in a massive hole. He now officially has -67 points in the Cup Series standings. Unsurprisingly, that lands him in last. He also has -10 playoff points, meaning that he’s behind the 8-ball even if he makes the Cup Series playoffs.

Briscoe is talented enough to dig out of the hole and make the playoffs. But anything beyond that could be a serious uphill battle.
