Canada has no interest in being colonized by the United States anytime soon. That was the loud and clear message from Canadians on Thursday night before, during and after the final of the inaugural 4 Nations Face-Off in the Boston. The hockey game pitted the U.S. against Canada in a game that quickly became as much about national pride as it was sporting prowess.
The United States previously defeated Canada 3-1 in the round robin stage of the tournament in a game that featured three fights in the first nine seconds. The vitriol stemmed from United States president Donald Trump alluding to making Canada the 51st state, while Canadians had recently booed the playing the U.S. national anthem at sporting events in their country.
Canadian Anthem Singer Tweaks ‘Oh, Canada’ Lyrics Before 4 Nations Finals Vs. USA
This time around, “Oh, Canada” singer Chantal Kreviazuk made her feelings abundantly clear on the matter while performing the Canadian anthem in Boston prior to the final. Kreviazuk changed one of the lyrics in the anthem from “in all of us command” to “that only us command” to show, steadfastly, that Canadians are serious about their self-determination.
“I’m somebody who grew up on music that spoke to the heart and the moment, and it shaped me as a songwriter and really as a human being,” she said of the decision. “I don’t think it would be authentic to me to be given a world stage and not express myself and be true to myself.”
Canada went on to win the game 3-2 in overtime to claim the tournament championship. Afterward, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau took to Twitter to fire a shot at the United States.
“You can’t take our country — and you can’t take our game,” Trudeau tweeted.
Prior to the game, Trump called the United States team and offered the players words of encouragement. Unfortunately for Americans, they didn’t seem to help.
