Charlotte Hornets Center Mark Williams Opens Up On Los Angeles Lakers Trade Falling Through

Los Angeles Lakers forward LeBron James dunks on Charlotte Hornets center Mark Williams

Mark Williams thought he hit the jackpot. The third-year center out of Duke, who is enjoying his best season yet in the NBA, was traded from the Charlotte Hornets to the Los Angeles Lakers in a move involving rookie Dalton Knecht. Williams was set to be the starting center on a team Lakers team that now featured not only LeBron James, but also Luka Doncic.

But before Williams knew it, his dream quickly became a nightmare. The Lakers determined that Williams’ history of back injuries, which limited him to just 62 games played in his first two seasons combined, was too big of an issue. They rescinded the trade on grounds of a failed physical and sent Williams back to Charlotte.

Williams finally opened up about the move falling apart on Wednesday ahead of Charlote’s games again the Lakers.

“My agent told me [that the trade was rescinded],” Williams said via the Charlotte Observer. “I didn’t think I had failed my physical. That didn’t even cross my mind. The night I got traded I played hella minutes. I didn’t think in any world that was possible. Since I’ve been back since the start of the year, I’ve played games with a lot of minutes. I feel like every injury I’ve had has been well-documented and I’ve recovered and been 100% since. So, I don’t know what went into that decision. I think that’s up to them.”

Williams missed the first 20 games of this season in Charlotte. He also missed multiple games just prior to the Lakers trade. But he believes he’s now 100 percent.

“You went from shocked to excited, back to shocked. You control what you can control,” he said.

Things got even worse for him on Wednesday night when he ended up on the wrong end of poster dunk by James.

But it’s Williams who got the last laugh, as Charlotte pulled out a 100-97 victory over LA. The Lakers sit at 32-21 and in fifth place in the Western Conference. But center depth is unquestionably and issue, and only time will tell if pulling the rug out from under Williams will come back to bite them.
