Amazon has gained creative control over the James Bond franchise in a move that has completely upended the future of the character. Amazon is taking over control of the franchise from the Broccoli family, the British producers who have long been the cinematic stewards of the character.
Barbara Broccoli, 64 years old, began producing the Bond films in the 1990s, beginning with GoldenEye in 1995. Brocoloi previously worked as an assistant director and associate producer on Octopussy, A View to a Kill, The Living Daylights, and License to Kill.
While Amazon officially acquired MGM Studios in 2022, thus forming Amazon MGM Studios, the Broccoli’s remained in creative control of the Bond franchise. That’s now changed.
Industry sources have long reported that Amazon wants to expand the Bond franchise — spinoffs, TV series, etc. — and they now have the ability to do that. The Broccolis have obviously been far more reserved in their use of the character over the decades, featuring him only in movies released every five or so years.
“As per details of the arrangement, Amazon MGM Studios, Wilson and Broccoli have formed a new joint venture to house the James Bond intellectual property rights. The three parties will remain co-owners of the iconic franchise but Amazon MGM will have creative control.”
“’Since his theatrical introduction over 60 years ago, James Bond has been one of the most iconic characters in filmed entertainment,’ said Mike Hopkins, head of Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios.” [via Variety]
With Amazon now in control of Bond, expect the process of the next film getting made, particularly casting the next Bond, to be accelerated. Current betting favorites to take over the iconic role of 007 from Daniel Craig are Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Josh O’Connor, Callum Turner, James Norton, Jack Lowden, Theo James, Henry Cavill, and Harris Dickinson.
The most recent film, No Time To Die, was released in 2021 and made over $774 million at the global box office despite how much the movie theater business was struggling at the time. Spectre, released in 2015, made $880 million, while 2011’s Skyfall stands as the first and only James Bond film to gross over $1 billion at the global box office.
