The St. John’s basketball team picked up a huge win in conference play against Big East rival Marquette on Tuesday. Rick Pitino struggled to watch the game play out on the court at times.
He admitted to having intrusive thoughts enter his head as his team struggled to put the Golden Eagles away. He had to push those thoughts to the back of his mind in order to continue fighting for victory.
The Red Storm would eventually do so, pulling away late in the contest. The game was highly competitive throughout, with Marquette holding a slight one-point lead at the halftime break. St. John’s battled back in the second half, outscoring the Eagles by seven points.
Marquette trailed 60-59 with just over three minutes remaining in the game as they looked to pull the road upset. Unfortunately, that wouldn’t come to fruition. St. John’s went on a quick 6-0 run to build on that lead and eventually escape with a 70-64 win.
While they were able to leave victorious, the Red Storm could’ve made things much less stressful with a better performance from the charity stripe. As a team, they shot just 17-31 from the free throw line. It’s an issue that’s followed the squad throughout its 20-3 start.
After the game, Rick Pitino was asked about the missed freebies. Here’s what he had to say.

St. John’s did shoot it better when it counted, sinking eight of their final nine attempts from the line to put the game on ice. But that came after a 9-for-22 start.
Pitino was happy to get the win. In doing so, his team improved to 11-1 in the Big East where it currently sits atop the standings. You can bet this will be a point of emphasis in practice this week, though.
The road doesn’t get any easier for the Red Storm this week. They’ll face off against UConn on Friday as they look to continue improving their NCAA Tournament resume.
