There’s been a fair amount of bad blood between Noah Lyles and Tyreek Hill since the latter took a shot at the former in the wake of his disappointing showing at the Paris Olympics. Now, the beef has once again been reignited thanks to what transpired when the sprinter defended his crown for the third year in a row at a competition in Boston.
In 2023, Noah Lyles managed to ruffle plenty of feathers when he downplayed the “world champions” label that’s commonly harnessed to describe the teams and players who win a title in the NBA and other leagues primarily (or entirely) comprised of franchises based in the United States.
The sprinter had already won a number of world championships in events organized by the international body that oversees his sport, and he had the chance to pad his résumé when he headed over to Paris for the Summer Olympics last year.
Lyles won his first Olympic gold medal by beating Jamaica’s Kishane Thompson in a 100 m sprint, which was decided by a photo finish where the two men were separated by just .005 seconds.
He was the favorite to win the 200 m four days later, but he settled for bronze before being taken off the track in a wheelchair while blaming a COVID diagnosis for his lackluster showing (he subsequently withdrew from the team events he’d been planning to take part in).
Tyreek Hill was one of the many pro athletes who were rubbed the wrong way by Lyles’ aforementioned take on the “world champions” descriptor, and he fired a shot in his direction by saying “Noah Lyles can’t say nothing after what just happened to him” while accusing him of faking the illness and asserting he’d beat him in a race if given the opportunity.
That kicked off a war of words that saw the two men trade barbs with the help of podcasts and social media, and while there’s been plenty of talk about a race to settle the matter once and for all, it still hasn’t come to fruition.
On Sunday, Lyles had the chance to secure a win in the 60 m for the fourth year in a row at the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix in Boston, and he did exactly that by beating the other four guys who’d earned a spot in the final when he posted a time of 6.52.
The 27-year-old subsequently pulled out a piece of paper he’d stashed under his shorts to display a message that read “Tyreek Could Never” to escalate his feud with the Dolphins wide receiver (whose name was actually nowhere to be found on the list of players who recorded the highest speed on the field this season).

At this point, we need these two guys to go head-to-head and settle the matter once and for all, but only time will tell if that ends up happening.
